as can be seen clear ly f rom the gr aph , the differ ence in the number s of people working in the three major employment sector s in the u .k . economy in the early 1980s was r elatively small , with about 4 million worke rs in engineering , 5 million in agriculture and 5 .5 million in the se rvice indust ries .

however , the period 1980-1990 saw significant changes in the relative sizes of these th ree employment sector s . there was a r apid decline in employment in agricultur e, with the number of workers dropping by more than 80% . on the other , employment oppor tunities in the service indust ries in- creased sharply , especially after 1986 , wher eas the engineer - ing sector e_perienced a gr adual but constant decline .

trends in the above gr aph clear ly indicate that the se rvice indust ries will continue to employ the la rgest number of people at least for the ne_t few yea rs , while the engineering sector will need somewhat fewer workers in the ne_t decade . on the whole, the total number of employment offered in these three sector s was much smaller than ten years befor e and ther e does n’t seem to be any likelihood for improvement in the near future . so , students who a re going to graduate soon may need to prepar e to seek employment elsewhere .
